History
A non-profit agency since July 1983, the Lighthouse of the Big Bend provides free services for any person who is legally blind in Franklin, Gadsden, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor and Wakulla Counties. You may have known us by our former names - most recently FIRE, the Florida Institute of Rehabilitation Education, or before 2000 as Independence for the Blind (IB) or long ago in 1983 as the Rural Center for Independent Living in Gadsden County.
The Lighthouse of the Big Bend is a fully accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Agencies Serving the Blind and Visually Impaired (NAC). The Lighthouse is a member of the United Way of the Big Bend, as well as the Florida Association of Agencies Serving the Blind. The Lighthouse receives funding from the Florida Department of Education, Division of Blind Services, the Community Human Services Partnership, the Capital Medical Society Foundation, The Able Trust, our Paula Bailey Dining in the Dark benefit, and many community donations.
